My jewellery is inspired by Japanese girls’ comics, Shoujo manga. In particular I looked at the way its feminine heroines are portrayed and colours are used to convey emotions. The expressions of emotion in manga are so alive that they stimulated my desire to transform them into contemporary fine jewellery.
The final MA collection consists of a series of rings/small sculptures/objects with the theme of fantasy and romance, a recurrent theme of Shoujo manga. The pieces have decorated spherical forms using both silver and acrylics. Similar to manga characters using magical items to transform themselves and to meet their desires, the interaction between the rings and the wearers will create a sensual atmosphere around them.
The theme of cherry blossoms runs throughout the collection. It indicates its oriental origin and represents femininity and romanticism. It is presented in varied ways in terms of design, scale and materials. The pieces are created mainly with silver, adding materials such as acrylics, polymer clay and gemstones. To achieve a unique and contemporary impression, striking colours are used in parts of the work. The colours resemble feminine, “girlish” ones used in Shoujo manga. Each colour has its own character due to different materials used.
Through the playful design and the combination of colours and materials I am able to capture and reproduce the special emotions evoked by Shoujo manga. The collection is truly for females who are yearning and seeking for something extraordinary.
