Captivated by the hidden: an exploration of the translucent.
The aesthetics of form, structure and material composition have been the main inspirations for my artistic development. Having always worked with traditional metals incorporating solid geometric compositions, I was driven to find a material to work with that would have a more organic and textured quality.
For my latest collection I sought to investigate the properties of stainless steel mesh, a material that is rarely used in contemporary studio jewellery.
My exploration led to a journey that provoked many questions and generated a lot of opportunities as I pushed the limits of the material. By exploiting the qualities of the mesh, especially the translucent and flexible aspects, light and elegant pieces have been created from a source that in its original form can be regarded as rigid and plain.
The construction is light and minimal, enhancing the qualities
of the mesh and the surface design has been inspired by fluid patterns that
can be found within nature. This in turn has complimented line and form, which
has evolved in relation to the spatial flexibility offered by the mesh. The
aesthetics of many of the pieces can therefore be interpreted and altered
by direct interaction to create unique and personal designs. The combination
of fine gold and silver fixed within the beauty of the steel mesh has created
juxtapositions that I believe are unique within contemporary designs.
